Protect RIte Smiles members from cavity progression with SMART

Q2  Word of Mouth newsletter 2026

Silver Modified Atraumatic Restorative Technique (SMART) is a minimally invasive approach to managing dental cavities. It combines silver diamine fluoride (SDF) with a glass ionomer cement (GIC) restoration. This technique is particularly beneficial for RIte Smiles members, including pediatric and vulnerable patient populations, as it allows you to manage caries without extensive drilling or complete caries removal.

Following SDF application, a GIC restoration is placed. The glass ionomer:

  • Seals the lesion
  • Cuts off the supply to remaining bacteria
  • Provides ongoing fluoride release
  • Protects the effected tooth structure

This technique is beneficial as it allows you to manage decay conservatively while preserving as much healthy tooth structure as possible. It also helps reduce the risk of pulp exposure, which ensures tooth vitality is maintained.

SMART may be an effective treatment option for patients who:

  • Have difficulty attending multiple appointments
  • Lack consistent access to dental care
  • Are young, medically complex or behaviorally challenged

Claim submission considerations

When billing for restorations completed using the SMART technique, submit the direct resin‑based composite or restorative procedure code that reflects the final restoration placed. RIte Smiles billing guidelines and standard documentation requirements apply.
